Names submitted to the Minor Planet Center must be in a specific format. This format is defined by the MPC and is listed here. A summary of those guidelines is listed below.

Below is a summary of the MPC name submission guidelines.

  • Name must be specified as initials of given name/names and surname. Example: John Smith -> J. Smith
  • Initials must be of names as listed on official government documents. For example if your given name is "Robert" but you use "Bob" in day-to-day conversation you would use the initial "R." not "B.".
  • Names must be in proper case. You cannot submit names in all capital letters or all lowercase.
  • If your given name contains multiple initials they should be separated with a space. Example: J. R. R. Tolkien
  • If your given name contains a hyphen such as "Jean-Francois Hulot" you should include the hyphen in the initials. The given example would be abbreviated J.-F. Hulot
  • Surnames including hyphens should be provided as listed in government documents. Example: J. Smith-Johnson
  • Surnames with multiple names should be provided as listed on government documents. Example: A. Van der Pool
